MELVIN NELSON

Melvin Nelson played Senior Ball with Milford from early 1950's until 1964, then became involved with the formation of the Milford Recreation Association and joined EHMH. Later, Melvin played slow pitch and coached Milford Mens Intermediate Ball Team to a League Championship. Melvin served 21 years with the MRA, three as President, and 16 as Director. He was instrumental in the construction of the Milford Rec Hall, ball field, tennis courts, and skating pond. With EHMH, Melvin served as league president, coach, referee-in-chief, and refereed for 13 years with NSHA. After retirement, Melvin served as president of the Senior AAA Penguins and the Junior A Penguins for 7 years. To help cover expenses with the Junior A Team, he used his own personal credit and was instrumental in building the Penguin House as a fundraiser.

MERLIN WHITE

INDUCTED 2016

Merlin White began his coaching career as a CRC peewee coach in 1975. His teams played in the Tri-County Minor Softball Association and advanced to provincials every year. Merlin stepped away from coaching in 1986 after the Rockets first year of junior play. Merlin’s dream was to create a softball field for the people of the Hants North area. In 1981, he procured a mortgage which was paid off in 1989, and built what was to become the best field in East Hants. In 1984, lights were installed and in 1985, the first fully electronic scoreboard in Nova Scotia was installed. The clubhouse had a canteen, team area, scorekeeper, announce booth, and equipment room. Merlin was also the grounds keeper.  The ball field was always ready for teams coming to play.  Merlin continued looking after the Colbert Road ball field until 1996. Merlin was well-respected by all local sports athletes and fans for all of his contributions over the years.

NOEL SHORE SHOTS

The Noel Shore Shots were a Women’s fastpitch team from the “Noel Shore area, many of whom played sports at Hants North Rural High. The Shore Shots had a large fan base which followed them wherever they played. During their most prolific years, 1972-1978, the Shore Shots won seven Provincial titles and three maritime titles. Nine Shore Shots played for either the Nova Scotia Junior or Senior Teams. The core team was coach, Vaughnie Huntley, manager, Harry Miller, and players: Joanne Garby, Debbie Harvey, Debra Hines, Margie Densmore, Iris Densmore, Kathy Parks, Janice Singer, and Sonya Singer. Others who played an important role in the team's success during this time are: Karen Huntley, Chrystal McLellan, Dana Laffin, Sharon Campbell, Shirley Campbell, Yvonne Dickson, Verna Garby, Denise White, Ruth Garby,  Abbie Singer, Susan Harvie, Alice Hill, Linda Miller, Vinetta Patterson, Valerie Beazley, Cheryl  Hill, Jackie Cox, Lona White, and Annie Woodworth.

ANNIE WOODWORTH

INDUCTED 2016

Annie Woodworth was an outstanding pitcher and outfielder in the Tri-County League. Annie played with Shubie Co-op in 1972-73, winning Provincial Intermediate A titles in both years. She won the Tri-County League with the Elderbank Royalettes in 1975. In 1984, she won the Tri-County League and the Nova Scotia Recreationals with the Carroll’s Corner Comets. In 1985-87, Annie repeated this feat with the Carroll’s Corner Cougars. Playing as a Brookfield Elkette, Annie won a Provincial Intermediate A title in 1968, Maritime Ladies in 1969, and Nova Scotia and Atlantic Regional in 1970, thus earning the right to play at Canadian Championships. Annie went on to represent Nova Scotia at the Nationals four additional times, and coached minor ball in Carroll’s Corner for 20 years. After softball, Annie joined the Brookfield Golf & Country Club, winning seven senior club championships and an NSGA 70 & over championships in 2008 and 2012.

FRANK FRASER

INDUCTED 2016

Frank Fraser has been involved with car racing for his entire life. For 50 years, he raced in the Maritimes, Ontario, and the U.S. Frank has won over 100 races in his career and was always a fierce competitor, wanting to build the best car to win the next race. He has been a racer, a race car builder, a team owner, a promotor (ONSLOW SPEEDWAY), and a race director (Centre for Speed), a mentor, and the Vice President of the Maritime Motorsport Hall of Fame. Frank's two boys, Frank Jr. and the late Scott, both followed their fathers love for racing, becoming builders and drivers. Frank has been inducted into the Maritime Motorsport Hall of Fame and the Truro Sports Hall of Fame. His name is still spoken at race tracks with reverence. Truly, a living legend of his time.

BILL PARKER

INDUCTED 2016

INDUCTED 2016

Bill Parker grew up in Enfield and was a natural athlete.  From Little League Baseball, Half-Pint and High School Football, to Junior and Senior Hockey. he excelled.  It was during his years with the East Hants Junior Penguins that Bill demonstrated dominance as a player.  One of the original members of the Penguins, 1967 to 1971, Bill was respected by opposing players for his skill and solid body checks.  Standing 6’ 2” and weighing in at 220 lbs, he was one of the largest players in Junior Hockey in the province and a perennial All Star right winger. In 1971, Bill played on the NS Canada Games team that finished 4th in Saskatoon.  Scouted by every Junior “A” Team in the Maritimes and earning a tryout with the Edmonton Oilers, Bill was content to play his hockey with his home team.  Bill was leader on all of his teams, holding Assistant Captain and Captain designations.

JEFF SMITH

INDUCTED 2016

Jeff Smith grew up in Milford with his sister and three brothers. He enjoyed many sports, but above all, he loved hockey. Jeff was a well-liked team leader with a competitive spirit and a warm smile. With EHMH, Jeff won a Provincial Championship with the 1995-96 Atom AAA Penguins. He played for the Dartmouth Subways Midgets in 2000-01 winning the League and Atlantic Championships before losing in the Bronze Medal game at the Air Canada Cup. Jeff also played for Team Atlantic at the World Under 17 Hockey Challenge in 2001. That same year, he was drafted in the 5th round of the QMJHL draft by the Victoriaville Tigres. Jeff won the QMJHL President’s Trophy with Victoriaville in 2001-02 and with Hull 2002-03, losing in Memorial Cup Final both times. Jeff's life ended far too soon after a tragic accident when he was 19. He will always be remembered as a gifted athlete, a talented hockey player, a loving son, brother, and a friend to many.
